Reverend John Guthrie,

Pastor at the First Presbyterian Church

in Roswell, NM

The Session of the First Presbyterian Church at their monthly meeting on August 17, 2017 unanimously approved the calling of Pastor John Guthrie. to serve as Pastor at FPC-Roswell.

The Reverend John Guthrie has been called to serve as pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Roswell beginning Sunday, October 1. Reverend Guthrie comes to Roswell from Los Alamos.  He has also served churches in Utah and Colorado.  He received his seminary training at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, graduating in 2006.

Guthrie discerned a call to pastoral ministry after a career in physics, having received the Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Dallas in 1989. He served two postdoctoral appointments and then taught physics at the University of Central Oklahoma. “People sometimes ask how it happened that I made such an unusual and striking change of vocation,” Rev. Guthrie said.  “The first and most relevant answer is that the Holy Spirit did that.”

Reverend Guthrie’s strengths and passions in ministry center around equipping evangelists, building disciples, leading Bible studies, developing generous givers, and strengthening the local church.

Reverend Guthrie has been married to Nancy Guthrie for thirty-six years.  They have two biological and two adopted children, all grown and scattered across the country.  They have one grandchild.  Nancy Guthrie is the executive director of a small non-profit organization in Santa Fe.

“I am looking forward to beginning work with the saints of First Presbyterian Church,” said Guthrie. “I anticipate many opportunities to work with them, as guided and empowered by the Holy Spirit, to promote vitality and growth in the congregation and to enhance the church’s service to the Roswell community.”

Please welcome John and Larry to First Presbyterian Church, Roswell.
